Historically the village was founded in 1731 thanks to the impact of Señor de Formentera, but it wasn´t until 1840 that it was recognised as a population centre with the inauguration of the parochial church. With the 2nd Republic & La Ley Mendizábal, which liberated the village from the church and nobles and marked the start of the economic development of the village. The remains of Conde de Algorfa were held in the church in a marble sarcophagus, until 1964 when they were transferred to the municipal cemetery. There are numerous festivals & cultural events to enjoy such as ¨Day of the bicycle¨, which is celebrated the first weekend in May and also in May we have the patron ¨Virgin de la Purisima Concepcion¨ with attractions like a cross and a procession involving all the inhabitants of the village. Also at the end of August and in honour of San Miguel and San Roque are other popular local festivals. It finishes with a procession in their honour on Sunday and on Monday they celebrate the day of sardines and the wine. We cannot forget to mention the typical gastronomy of the region which can be enjoyed in the various restaurants of the village. The stews and rice dishes being the most significant, which also benefits the principal activity of the village which is agriculture with citrus fruits, cereal crops and vegetables. Finally we inform you of the great tradition of producing and bottling of honey from the Vega Baja region.
